Meta began rolling out Facebook Verified last week, a free badge intended to confirm that a real person, rather than an AI-generated or fake account, is behind a Facebook profile, according to Meta’s newsroom post.
The verification process requires users to record a short video selfie, which Meta checks against existing profile photos to confirm a match. The company says the process typically takes a few minutes and carries no subscription fee. Eligibility is limited to users 18 and older who are in good standing with Meta’s community standards on fraud, scams and inauthentic behavior; the badge is not available for Pages or ProMode accounts, per the announcement.

Once verified, the badge will initially appear on Marketplace listings, Dating profiles, Groups and user profiles, with Feed post badges planned for a later phase, Meta said. The rollout is starting in select markets before expanding globally, though Meta did not specify a timeline for full availability.
Meta was explicit that the badge is a signal of authenticity, not an endorsement. Verified status does not mean Meta guarantees a user’s trustworthiness, and verified accounts remain subject to the platform’s standard community standards and commerce policies.
The launch is one day after Google rolled out its own selfie-video feature, though for a different purpose. Google’s selfie video feature is an account-recovery tool rather than a trust badge. As SPB reported, Google’s version asks users to record a short video following guided head movements, then stores an encrypted facial-biometric template it can match against at sign-in.
Like Google’s feature, Meta’s badge is built on biometric pattern-matching rather than the public-key cryptography passkeys use. A person’s face is captured, converted into a stored reference, and compared against fresh captures later. Neither company has described its approach as a zero-knowledge or privacy-preserving proof, the kind of system that can confirm a fact about a person without storing anything that identifies them.
One difference is disclosure. Google was explicit that it wants to reuse selfie-video data as a training pipeline for facial recognition and age-estimation systems “across Google services,” with an opt-in checkbox attached. Meta’s announcement does not address whether Facebook Verified biometric data feeds any similar training use.
Meta’s launch follows a broader industry scramble to shore up identity verification. Deepfake-driven injection attacks, where fabricated video is fed directly into a verification system, have jumped 40% as biometric fraud tooling industrialized, according to a 2026 Entrust Identity Fraud Report.
Meta and Google’s moves are part of the same pressure pushing platforms from Tinder to TikTok to LinkedIn toward selfie-plus-liveness verification over single-factor checks.
Selfie-based liveness verification is becoming a default trust signal across consumer platforms. Like Meta and Google, many rely on a stored facial-biometric template compared against fresh captures, not more privacy-minded public-key or zero-knowledge schemes.
Identity security professionals have flagged concerns over stored facial-biometric template databases that are susceptible to compromise. The main worry is that a face can’t be rotated the way a credential can.
